As a society under the influence of the church, the Portuguese and in particular the Lisbon celebrated every year on June 13, the Feast of St. Anthony. The celebration survived the intention of the Republicans that was subtracted from the schedule most of the national and religious celebrations San Antonio is still the patron saint of Lisbon, and municipal holiday in this city.
The festivities in honor of St. Anthony soon begin on the evening of the day June 12. Every year the city hosts the alfacinha Marchas Popular, large allegorical parade that runs through the Avenida da Liberdade where different neighborhoods compete for best choreography, best costumes and best song allusive.
The boys buy a Mangere to give girlfriends, which hides a flag with a popular block. A bit all over the city where there arraiais eat grilled sardines and drink was red wine, all accompanied by music and lots of fun.
St. Anthony is the saint matchmaker, and the Municipality of Lisbon, organizes each year in the Cathedral Patriarch of Lisbon, the marriage of many young grooms known as "engaged to San Antonio."
